MALAZAN has made it to the 7th installment---"reaper's gale", it's getting better, and it is sure the best fantacy novel out there, with "DARK TOWER" slightly behind...
I do not understand why everybody make a fuss about "ASOIAF", yeah, there are lot of plot twists and good character development, but hell, where is the magic?(BTW, i only finished book two, and left book three and four on my shelf... and took up Tad William's otherland series) there is no exciting scenes, maybe you are gonna worried about what happened to Davos,Jon,Catelyn..., but at the end, it's always politics and intrigues solving the conflicts, come on, i am reading a fantacy book, i am entitled to expect a magic fight here and there, a sense of wonder somewhere... If i wanna read some good history novel with fantastic characterization, belivable plot and good prose, i would reread "pillar of the earth"(ken Follet)
however, if we are comparing "ASOIAF" only in its genre, then it's good, may be it's in the top 20, but it is definitely not the No. 1.
apart from "Malazan" and "dark tower", Raymond E Feist's "Magician" arrives without a doubt at Top 3.
Following is Cook Glen's "the black company", then it's "oath of the empire"...
BTW, i also have comments for the blockbusters out there:
" Wheel of times"---plot moving too slow and too long, the idea is kinda out dated
"Lord of the Rings"---well, black VS white, good VS evil, complex world, but still, even the idea of Hobbits(DWARF) make me think of fairy tale
"Assissan"--- yeah, not bad, above average, but outstanding? i doubt it...
"Sword of the truth"---at least the first 3 books are great stuff, but i heard from book 7 this series turned into a disaster
"

rince of Nothing"----those people's name killed this book, i can not pronounce even one of them, so quickly, i closed the book at page 50, i do not know if it was a good story or not... but i hope Scott will change this disgusting habbit to give his characters wierd names...
"Chronicles of Thomas Covenant"---good stuff, on par with "ASOIAF", even better
"Otherland"---cyberpunk with a bit of fantacy, READ it, i love a book which mixes Science fiction and fantacy so well.
"Dresten file"---easy beach read, great idea and funny prose
"D&D" books and "Forgetten realm" books----they are for starters, maybe "deathgate cycle" is different
well, actually i read more science fiction tahn fantacy, so...my list ends here
