最新阅读的DAVOS第二章部分情节

Davos's arrival at White Harbor. He compares it to other port cities, and seems to favor it over most others he's visited. It smells of the sea, is small and relatively clean, etc.

Davos arrives in White Harbour on the Merry Midwife. He thinks about how it had all seemed simpler when he started out - they hadn't received a pledge from White Harbour, so Stannis sent him as an envoy to talk to Lord Manderley in person. However, due to storms along the way, he is no longer arriving with Salladhor Saan's fleet behind him, as originally intended. Instead, he's smuggling himself in. He thinks something to himself about being better to play the common sailor than the lord at the moment.

He thinks about his old captain on the Cobblecat, and the first time they visited White Harbour, while Davos was still a cabin boy. This is where the comparison between cities' and women's scents are made. White Harbour smells like the sea, as a mermaid ought. (The other cities described are Oldtown, Lannisport, and King's Landing, with the latter by far the worst of the lot.)

He notices that many of the defences around White Harbour have been fortified and are now active, even the old ringfort of the First Men that had stood in ruins for centuries. There is mention of a superstition that the more seals there are when entering/leaving White Harbour, the better luck the watcher will have. This time, there are no seals at all.

Davos thinks of his wife and sons, lamenting those sons lost to him and wishing he could be with the ones remaining.

He also thinks back to two other meetings he'd had on the way: the black brothers of Eastwatch and Lord Borrell of Sisterton. Eastwatch told him that the Manderleys and the Boltons do not get along -- particularly after Roose Bolton was made Warden of the North -- so he thought that Manderley was likely to declare for Stannis (out of spite? revenge? contrariness?). Borrell, otoh, told him that the Manderleys planned on putting aside their dislike of the Boltons and joining with them and the Freys. Davos is not sure whom to believe.

Davos finishes by thinking he'll find out the truth soon enough; he just hopes he's not too late.

Davos is sailing into the port of White Harbor on and old cog, the Merry Midwife. The ship regularly plies it's trade between Sisterton and WH and Davos is dressed as a common sailor. He thinks regretfully of the style he hoped to enter WH in, with Salladhor Saan and his ships. Instead he must now smuggle himself into the city.

He thinks of an old master he used to serve and the description this man gave of the smells that belonged to the major ports of Westeros.

Oldtown - fruity and perfumed like a dowager
Lannisport - earthy, a milk maid with the smell of wood smoke in her hair
KL - reeking like a whore
WH - salty and a little fishy like a mermaid would smell

WH is smaller than those other Westerosi ports and cleaner. Davos decribes the city on the eastern bank of the White Knife, with a long sea wall with small towers arrayed along it's length. Seal Rock dominates the Harbor. Once an abandonded fort of the First Men (like the Fist) jutting up in the harbor. Now it's garrisioned and bedecked with catapults and other ballistic defences. Beyond the harbor and the quays, the streets are wide and cobbled and it's easy for a man to find his way around. Houses are white-washed with steep roofs of dark grey slate.

Davos thinks about the Manderlys and realizes that there is bad blood between them and the Boltons, but has heard from Lord Borrell that Manderly has made gestures of supplication to both. He thinks that Manderly could be convinced that he needs Stannis as bad as Stannis needs him. Doubt is strong in Davos' mind and he hopes to learn the truth of where things stand quickly.

The reading ended with Davos hoping he wasn't too late.
